HERING, Cornelius “Neil”, 90, lifelong resident of Hillsdale, NJ died on Friday, October 4, 2013. He was born on June 19, 1923 in Hillsdale, the son of the late Irving and Nellie Hering. Beloved husband of Priscilla (Adams) for 67 years. Loving father of Nancy, Neil and his wife Terry, and John and his wife Maureen. Cherished and adored grandfather of eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Neil was a retired union carpenter who enjoyed hunting, sports and fly fishing. He was a member of Rock Tavern Fish and Game Club and named “Sportsman of the Year” in the Hillsdale Fish and Game Club in 1967. Neil was an active volunteer in town; he helped start the Hillsdale Little League and was a charter member of the Hillsdale Ambulance Corps. He was also a member of the Westwood Elks for 49 years as well as the Hillsdale Fire Dept. for 37 years. He was named Chief in 1957. Neil also helped start the Friends of the Pascack Brook, which holds an annual Kids Fishing contest. In 2010, American Legion Post 162 honored him to be named grand marshall of the Hillsdale Memorial Day Parade. A World War II U.S. Air Force Veteran, Neil was discharged a sergeant serving in the American and Italian campaigns; he flew 18 missions in B-17 Bomber Planes over Northern Italy, PO Valley and Southern France with the 15th Air Force 88th Bomb Group. He was awarded the distinguished unit badge with one oak leaf cluster European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
